The Gypsy Rose Obsession, Part 8
Show Notes
Gypsy Rose Blanchard thought no one was listening.
For years, everything she said from inside Chillicothe was being recorded. Now it's public. More than five hundred hours of it.
Some of those recordings broke through on social media, because on them Gypsy and her now ex-husband Ryan can be heard using racial slurs. She eventually apologized publicly for it.
But that's not the part that got me. It's what she says about her mother, when there's no camera on and no reason to give a polished answer.
Fair warning. This one is rough.
Content warning: racist language and racial slurs, child abuse, sexual content involving a child, murder, and self-harm.

Speaker: Gypsy Rose Obsession Part-08 (FM2 -16LUFS)
Javier: Before we start, a heads up about this one. You are going to hear prison calls released by the State of Missouri. They contain racist language, including racial slurs spoken by people who never expected anyone outside of prison to hear them. There's also a discussion of sexual content involving a child, murder, self-harm. Seriously, guys, this one is pretty heavy, so if you have little ones in the room or are at work, you might want to wear headphones for this one
Securus: Hello, this is a free call from
Javier: Hey,
Securus: it's Gypsy ... an offender at the Chillicothe Correctional Center. This call is from a correctional facility and may be monitored and recorded.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Hi. Is this Ryan?
Ryan Anderson: Hello?
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Hi.
Ryan Anderson: Hey.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: How you doing?
Ryan Anderson: I'm good. What you up to?
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Uh, not a whole lot. I'm extremely bored tonight.
Ryan Anderson: Really?
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Yeah.
Javier: This is Gypsy Rose Blanchard's first call with Ryan Anderson, the man who eventually will become her husband. This call was recorded May 2020.
Ryan Anderson: That made me feel special. Well,
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: I mean, I, like I told you, I don't, um, like, when I got your letter, I normally don't respond to, like, everybody. Like, I'll, I'll take it and appreciate the support that I get. Um- Mm-hmm ... I don't make an effort to reach out to, you know, to them. Um, so that was kind of a rarity for me. But I really thought that from your letter you came across as genuine, and so I just kinda wanted to get to know you. You seem like a cool guy, so I just added you on
Javier: Facebook. Gypsy tells Ryan that after The Act came out on Hulu, she received 9,000 contact requests through Securus, the prison messaging platform. Anyone can create a free account. You pick the prison, search for the inmate by first and last name, and that's it.
Ryan Anderson: I tell you what, it's been... I, I've been amazed by that. Like, I, I didn't expect it. You know, I just sent my letter thinking, "Okay, that'll be the end of that," you know? "Hopefully she gets it." And then when I got that invite, I was just like, "Wow." Like, I, I, you know, like I said that in my email 1,000 times, I was like, "Wow."
Javier: Two years later, they got married. She was still behind bars. Today's episode is a rough one, guys. I've listened to so many of these prison calls that I want to dip my ears in bleach, and trust me, by the end of this, you will too. The point of this episode is not to embarrass anyone. As tempting as it is to play the most salacious calls, I won't. That's something that you could do on your own time. But these calls are worth exploring because with each new one, we learn a little bit more about Gypsy, who she is, and how she really feels. You're listening to the Gypsy Rose Obsession. I'm Javier Leva, and this is Pretend: Stories About Real People Pretending to be Someone Else.
Securus: You may start the conversation now.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: So is it too soon to tell you that I love a marquise-cut diamond and
Ryan Anderson: I'm a size six and a half? Uh, a, a little bit. A little bit. We have, we have you made a month.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Oh, yeah, it's a month tomorrow.
Ryan Anderson: A month tomorrow, that's right. I, I haven't forgot.
Javier: Hmm, you better not. Ryan and Gypsy were moving fast. I
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: had such a wonderful weekend with Ryan. Mom, I love him so much.
Speaker: Oh, I'm so glad to hear you say that.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Like, I am so in love with this man. I don't think that, like, anything is ever gonna break us, for real.
Javier: When the prison calls were released, the anti-Gypsy side of the internet lost their collective minds. And I don't blame them. It's bad.
Content Creator: In case you haven't heard, Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison calls are beginning to be released. You have to listen to this phone call. I need to talk to you guys about the call we li- just listened to. Gypsy Rose is literally... Just listen to this. I'm so disturbed. I feel like every time prison calls get leaked from her, it just gets worse.
Javier: In one call, Ryan tells Gypsy a secret that he's never told anyone else, a secret so foul, so disgusting, that I decided not to play it here. Plus, it's not relevant to Gypsy's story. But trust me, it is disgusting. But what they say right after that is worth hearing.
Kristy Blanchard: What?
Ryan Anderson: Yeah. No. And
Kristy Blanchard: that's
Ryan Anderson: a juicy
Kristy Blanchard: one, baby. Oh,
Ryan Anderson: that is a juicy one. And I was, like, embarrassed after I did it. And I only did it twice. Why? Uh, I was mad, baby. I was mad. Oh, I'm so sor- oh, my
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: gosh
Javier: They really thought no one would ever hear this, and here we are
Ryan Anderson: Yeah, that's something I've never told anybody that. Really? Really.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Oh.
Ryan Anderson: And I just told you and the guard listening.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Well, there is no guard listening.
Ryan Anderson: Well, monitoring phone calls. They don't even do that. It's just recorded and what, what it is is it's recorded and then if somebody wants to report somebody, like telling somebody for something, like they could be like, another girl could be like go to the back and be like, "Oh, Gypsy was talking about drugs and at this time, at this date," and they can go back to that phone call
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: and then listen to the recording. So it's not like it's- Okay
Securus: This call is from a correctional facility and may be monitored and recorded.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: It's not monitored and
Ryan Anderson: recorded live. Okay. Okay. Well, you know, I know that show Love After Lockup, they get their phone calls, so. Mm. Yeah,
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: they do. Yeah.
Ryan Anderson: But you know, I'm sure you have to give permission for all that.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Yeah. Yeah, um.
Javier: Well, now we know. Missouri didn't need anyone's permission. Yikes.
Content Creator: Because it's recorded on a, a prison line, there's absolutely zero fucking expectation of fucking privacy.
Javier: As their relationship develops, you can tell Ryan is not crazy about all these other men that Gypsy calls from prison.
Ryan Anderson: Baby, you gotta stop calling him so much now.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: I know.
Ryan Anderson: I love you. No, you're not video calling him on the day you get out of prison. I'm telling you that fucking shit ain't happening. Like how does that look? What do
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: you mean?
Ryan Anderson: What do you think I mean? Ryan needs to understand that y'all are not gonna be buddy buddy when you get out. I'm sorry. That shit's just not
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: happening. Why? You don't have nothing to worry about.
Javier: This debate whether Gypsy can keep talking to her male friends goes on for a while.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: But you hung up on me, so you should apologize.
Ryan Anderson: Said I'm sorry. I apologize.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: It's okay. It's not like you're trying to tell me who I can and can't FaceTime when I'm finally out of prison.
Ryan Anderson: No, I'm not I'm really not.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: I'm really tired.
Ryan Anderson: Fuck. What did I say now?
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: What are your expectations for me when I get out? What are your expectations as far as my boundaries of what I can and can't do with my friends?
Ryan Anderson: You know my boundaries. That's it. Baby, I don't control you. I don't, at all. You do whatever you want.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: I do whatever I want at the risk of pissing you off. I have to walk on eggshells with you.
Ryan Anderson: No, you don't.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Well, that's how you make me feel.
Ryan Anderson: Baby, it's weird calling dudes all the time. Like, that's weird to me. Do I want dudes always calling you? No. Like, I'm a, I'm a, I'm a husband. I, you know, I don't want that. That's just me not wanting my wife, you know, being flirted with. I'm sorry if you don't like that.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: No, you're, you're fine. I, I forgot. I forgot about the whole thing. I'm, I'm married now, so I can't have any friendships with anybody of the opposite sex. I forgot, though. It's like, my bad. So my... So I'm sorry. We're still having the same argument over and over and over again. I told you before we even got married, I'm like, "What you do is you isolate me." A- And it's not that you're saying directly, "I don't want you to talk to this person." It's, you're guilt-tripping me by, "Oh, I, I just feel like I'm, I'm so scared to lose you." Yeah. My mom did that, and I'm here for her murder, so is that how you wanna end up? If you don't trust me, if we don't have trust, real trust, in this relationship, and the, if the only way you could trust me is if you could touch me and see me, that's not trust.
Javier: And believe it or not, that was not the end of their relationship. Later, Gypsy tells Ryan that she's just not attracted to him anymore.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: We're married. I don't look at sex with you. I just don't see you as a sexual being. I see you
Javier: as a cuddle
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: buddy, not a sexual- But, but, but we
Javier: haven't had sex. It doesn't mean- Damn. You know, from these calls, it seems like Gypsy stayed with Ryan out of convenience. Someone to buy her things, somewhere to land after prison. There are more than 500 hours of these prison calls, and most of them never broke through to the mainstream media, but one set did.
Ryan Anderson: What'd you say?
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: I said all these fucking black are so loud.
Ryan Anderson: Whoa.
Javier: That's after the break
Content Creator: Gypsy Rose, y'all favorite ... God, only fucking black . Wow There's apparently several phone calls going around where her and her man are using the N-word. They are referring to other inmates as N-words. She's talking about once you go Black, you never go white. Once you go Black, we don't want you back. Y'all fans are hurt. Look at how she look. She round here calling N-words and got a, a husband
Javier: out here liking cheering. Nah, bro, sorry. The Jypverse, the Gypsy haters, whatever you wanna call them, they've all heard these calls. More than 500 hours have been posted so far, and each new one is like chum in the water. The rest of us, you know, normal people with better things to do with our lives, are blissfully unaware of which guy Gypsy was talking to in 2022 or who she got into a prison fight with. But these, whoa, these prison calls made a splash.
Content Creator: Gypsy Rose Blanchard's ex-husband, Ryan Anderson, well, he's featured in some of these calls, and he's clearly a racist. You can tell by the way that he's speaking to Gypsy and asking her to put on a KKK robe, which she laughs at.
Ryan Anderson: KKK
Javier: robe, where's it at?
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: We wore it out yesterday. We're not, he's not race- we're not racist, but the N-word sure did come out a couple times. No ethnicity was safe. I don't
Javier: know. It's two people
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: on a yoga mat, and they look, what do
Ryan Anderson: you call it, Iranian with the, the towels on their heads? I can't remember. Iranian . You mean Muslim?
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Yes, it was three Muslim people
Javier: sitting on a yoga mat. Like, what? It's just not cool. That is awful. I'm sorry. Okay. That, that's too funny. At first it sounds like she's dipping a toe into racist territory, then it gets worse. Here she's talking about her half-sister Mia's new boyfriend, a boyfriend Mia is now engaged to.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Mia went on a date.
Ryan Anderson: Oh, with a Black fellow
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Yep.
Ryan Anderson: I told you. Once you go black, we don't want you back.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Well, this one's a, a little lighter than Andre though, and he's a lawyer.
Ryan Anderson: Oh, so he's an upper negro.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Yes. Oh,
Ryan Anderson: he's upper. He, he ain't no ghetto negro. Okay.
Javier: Racism seemed to be something that Ryan and Gypsy really reveled in.
Ryan Anderson: Yeah, I guess you're right. My brother's more racist than you or me.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Yeah. But you're up
Ryan Anderson: there.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: No, I'm not. I joke. I play.
Ryan Anderson: I do too. I do too, baby. I teach Black kids. If I was racist, I wouldn't teaching Black kids shit.
Javier: Yes, you heard right. Ryan Anderson was a middle school special education teacher in Louisiana.
Ryan Anderson: I just spend the most of my time fucking arguing with fucking cock-sucking black sons of bitches.
Kristy Blanchard: I am. Just
Ryan Anderson: arguing, like, "Sit down." Like, baby, if I tell... I'm gonna, I need to count how many times I say, "Sit down," in one day.
Javier: Ryan doesn't teach in the classroom anymore. He said publicly that he lost his job over his relationship with Gypsy, and not just from what we just heard. After these clips got out, people online said they filed formal reports with his old school and the school district. Some of them said that they were mandated reporters. But by then, he had already been gone. Ryan has responded to all of this. On live streams, he calls the recordings a smear campaign and says that the context was left out.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: I told Rusty that I worked here.
Ryan Anderson: What'd you
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: tell her? Uh, I told her what you said. What'd I say? I said, I said, "We're not, he's not rac- we're not racist," but the
Javier: N-word sure did come out a couple times. And just for context, I am stitching together multiple calls here. This wasn't one continuous conversation. It's a topic that kept coming up over and over again. At first, Gypsy let Ryan say all the racist things. It was hard to tell if she was just laughing just to go along with it, or maybe she didn't want the inmates on her end to hear what they were talking about. But then it became clear that she wanted him to know that she enjoyed it.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: God, all these fucking black are just so loud. Did you hear me?
Ryan Anderson: Yeah, I heard you. What'd you say?
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: I said all these fucking black are so loud.
Ryan Anderson: Whoa.
Javier: She said it twice.
Ryan Anderson: Oh, baby. My baby is
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: a racist. I am
Ryan Anderson: not. I'm just stating the obvious.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: You're saying, you said, "These black ." It's
Ryan Anderson: like a double negative. Oh. Like you, like you were saying these yellow Chinese.
Javier: These calls were just too big to ignore. Gypsy posted a statement apologizing, and even made celebrity gossip shows.
News: Gypsy Rose Blanchard apologizes after old prison phone calls resurfaced online. The Life After Lockup star addresses the controversy after recordings circulated on social media in which she could be heard using the N-word multiple times and making offensive comments about her sister Mia and Mia's fiance, Andre.
Javier: Let me read you part of Gypsy's statement. Quote, "I want to directly address some of the old prison phone calls that have recently been shared online. In those conversations, I used racist language and made cruel, disrespectful comments, including about people I love, my sister Mia and her fiance Andre. What I said was wrong. The words were racist, and I take full responsibility for saying them." End quote. Gypsy apologized to Mia and Andre directly, and to the Black community. She wrote that forgiveness isn't something that she's owed, and she ended it like this. Quote, "To everyone I hurt, especially Mia and Andre, I am truly sorry." End quote. Then I asked her about the calls myself over text, and she told me, quote, "I have no justification for those comments." End quote. She said growing up in the South influenced her, and that she took that ignorance to prison with her. Then she wrote this. Quote, "I'll fully own it. I'm not a racist today. I don't even think I was racist. It was more ignorance than anything else." Then a few lines later, she says, "Those were my beliefs 10 years ago." End quote. So publicly, the words were racist, and she takes full responsibility. Privately, to me, she doesn't think she was ever racist. And then in the same text, she calls it what she believed 10 years ago. I asked Gypsy why she talks to Ryan one way and then to the other men another way. She said that she can get along with anyone, find something to talk about with just anybody. Then I asked her, "Are you mirroring? Giving each guy what he wanted to hear?" And she said she never thought about it that way, but yeah. She doesn't talk to Ken, her current partner, the way she talks to Ryan. But maybe the uncomfortable truth is that she's not only mirroring, maybe the person on the other line is bringing out the worst in her. All right, so just checking in. Are you guys still with me? I told you this episode was gonna be rough, didn't I? But we're not done yet. This next part involves sexual acts around a child, and it's disturbing, and I went back and forth on whether I should include it. If Ryan were just another one of Gypsy's prison flings, I probably would have left it out, but he's not. She heard all of this and stayed with him anyway, and that's why it's in here. In this next prison call, Ryan is talking about reading a book to his ex-girlfriend's four-year-old son. Unlike the racist calls, Gypsy did not go along with this one, and thank God. Here's another call recorded right after that one.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: My husband tells me that he had sex in front of a kid. What? I didn't have sex in front of... The kid didn't see. Oh my God. Oh my God. I'm gonna talk to you- Oh my God. That he- Like, baby ... like, that he could've woke up and saw what was going on. But he did- and I wouldn't allow that. Like, I wouldn't have a- How are you gonna not allow that? Like... What do you mean, how am I not gonna allow that? Like, it didn't, like, nothing came of it. Like, it was, like, three seconds. Well, I'm gonna end my wedding right now. Baby. Like, right now, I'm not married to you. Like, I don't want to have kids with you. I don't- Gypsy Rose. We were- Baby, this is me. Stop. Stop. I would never do any- Stop. Well, I am trying to process, like, how do you come back from knowing something about your partner that completely changes your whole perception of them? Nothing happened, though. Yes- Like, I'm not a pedophile. Stop thinking of me like that. Would you say- Will you stop saying nothing happened, because something did happen. Then- Can you shut the fuck up for a minute and let me speak? So something did happen. You didn't touch the child. I am not saying that you touched that child. I'm not saying that, but you had oral in front of that child. Whether he was asleep 10 feet in the room, two inches from the room, it still happened.
Javier: Gypsy called Brian Golden, another one of her dudes, about what her husband just told her. Ugh, I hate
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: my life. I hate my
Bryan Golden: life. Ugh. Well, I mean, at least keep one eye open on that, I guess.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Yeah. Well, I'm definitely never gonna leave him alone
Bryan Golden: with a kid. Yeah, at least not without a fucking baby monitor somewhere.
Javier: Like I said, there are a lot of prison calls, and I can't include everything here. A lot of them are about Gypsy trying to find love, or just someone to talk to. I asked her about that, and she wrote back and said this, quote, "Listening back to the calls, a few things are clear in hindsight. Number one, I was nowhere near in any condition to be in any kind of romantic relationship. Dr. Phil was right about that. Number two, codependency was my downfall. Number three, ignorance is not an excuse to be a bad person. Number four, it doesn't matter how many men I talk to, it never filled the void that was empty within myself. I didn't love myself, therefore no one was ever gonna fill that void for me, no matter how much I tried." End quote. You know, playing these calls feels harsh. God knows what any of us would say if we thought no one was really listening. But there was one thing I kept wanting to know. What does Gypsy say about her mom? About Nick? About the abuse she suffered? Until now, we've only heard the polished, ready-for-TV answers. What does she say when she thinks it's private? The calls are telling. Gypsy is on the phone with her stepmom, Kristy. They're talking about Nick Godejohn's upcoming trial, and whether Gypsy might have to testify. And she's worried about all the interviews that she's done, about how much emphasis she put on Munchausen by proxy.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: I know what was going through my mind, and I know that, you know, my, and the community, and the, you know, uh, what was his name? Um- Patterson ... the prosecutor, Patterson. Patterson. Yeah. I know Dan Patterson, like, knew the, my background. Oh. Uh-huh. What I was going through. But what I'm worried about is whenever it comes close to trial, all the interviews that I've done, like, I put a lot of focus on Munchausen by proxy. And what I'm- Right,
Kristy Blanchard: which is good ...
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: and I, what I'm worried about is, like, they'll call me as a witness, and, you know, I mean, the straight up facts are that Nick knew that I had that kind of lifestyle, but whenever- But if you think about it ... it boils down to it, the only reason- Yeah ... we committed the murder is so that we could be together
Javier: The anti-Gypsy side hears this and hears exactly what they want to hear, a confession that the abuse was made up, that Munchausen by proxy was just another story to get her a deal. But listen to what she actually says. She never says it didn't happen. She says she put a lot of focus on it in her interviews. That's a different thing. Playing it up is not the same thing as making it up. What I heard was a girl trapped in an abusive home, willing to commit murder to get out of that house. But you know what's interesting? Rarely on these calls do we hear Gypsy show remorse or concern for anyone other than herself. But in this same call with Kristy leading up to Nick Godejohn's trial, a human side comes out.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: But whenever it comes down to it, like, his life is on the line, and I really don't feel like he deserves life without parole. I think-
Kristy Blanchard: Well, Gypsy, you sh- you, you say that Yeah You, you, oh, you say. At
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: this, at this point I'm like, if, if I'm called to Greene County or if I'm called to, you know, the visiting or whatever to do a deposition, I'll straight out say, you know, "Hey, I manipulated him. I was the mastermind," whatever. I know in my heart I didn't mean to do that. If I did, it was not meaning to. But to make him a little bit more of a victim, um, and try and help him out as much as I can, I'll be like, "Hey, I manipulated him. He's mentally retarded. I knew that he would do anything for me."
Speaker: No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. That's not how you say it. That's not how you say it because if you say it like that, everybody is gonna question you all over again. You didn't hold a gun to his head, like you said
Javier: Here's Gypsy talking about Dee Dee with Robert, one of her many prison pen pals.
Ryan Anderson: Do you ever miss her?
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: I do. I do sometimes. I mean, I have- Really? I have a couple of her pictures in my photo album. I still talk to them as if they were still here. And I like to get one of them alone, but I'll just talk and be like, "You know, this is what's going on with my life." And there are times that I'm like, "You know, I miss you, and I know that I haven't always made you proud, and I know that you wouldn't be happy with the life I'm living now, but I'm really happy, and I'd like to think that's all you really cared about." There are some people in my former neighborhood that say that she s- she, like her ghost is roaming around the house.
Ryan Anderson: Well, I mean, she died violently, so maybe that's, you know. Right.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Right. She had no peace. Mm-hmm. So maybe if I could bury her, that could bring her peace, and she can move on.
Javier: Gypsy is remembering something that she and her mom did together. They wrote a list, what they liked about themselves, what they didn't.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: And so when she listed off hers, it was all negative. It was like, "I'm overweight. I'm ugly. I'm broken." I'm sad. And in that moment, I felt like almost justified in thinking about murder because I was sad for her and I just didn't want her to mentally suffer anymore. Does that make sense? I was desperate to get out of that situation. I was, you know, I was scared. I was, you know, hopeless. But then there's this other side that almost felt like murder was a, an, an act of mercy towards her.
Javier: After Gypsy ran away from home the first time, she says that Dee Dee chained her down for two weeks, and during those two weeks, Dee Dee kept a knife by the bed. Gypsy says that her mother told her it was just in case she tried to escape, so that Dee Dee would have protection.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: She was asleep and she slept on her b- on her stomach the majority of the time. And so in a state of just, like, rage and fear and desperation, so while this chain was still on me, I reached over her, reached by her bedside table, got the knife, and I held it over her back. And so I held that knife above, like, in place, and I thought about it and, like, part of me, like, wanted to do it. Not to see her die or anything, but just to end it and be done with that life that I was living. And I couldn't do it, and I put the knife back where it was. Like, I didn't have it in me to do it. And I know it doesn't sound nice. I know it doesn't sound kind, but in the times that my mom and I had heart-to-heart conversations with each other, I felt such pity for her with looking at her life in the perspective of the way she looked at her life. Like, looking at her life through her eyes, it, for me, what I felt was that this woman should have never been born. Like, this woman's life is so sad, and it's kind of like her existence and thinking about the murder, I almost felt like I would be doing her a service because I don't think that she ever had the guts or the, I don't know, the drive to kill herself. I don't think she ever would kill herself, but I think at some point in her life she wanted to die.
Javier: I asked Gypsy about this call in particular.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Just so I can get my own fucking murder murder, just so I can live for everybody else.
Javier: Gypsy told me that she stands by that comment, but she would word it a little differently today. She said, quote, "I obviously worded it very vulgar in that call years ago, but I stand on the fact that I have my freedom now, and I'm not choosing to live my life for other people." End quote. So I'm gonna end the episode today with Gypsy reading a letter from Dee Dee.
Content Creator: Go ahead.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: All right. It says, "Gypsy, my devious daughter. I had suffered so much emotional trauma in my life that in July 1991, I gave birth to my first and only child, you. I thought that you, if no one else, would always love, accept, and respect me, and that you would never reject or betray me. I thought that I could truly say you were the one and only person who would never hurt me. I never could have imagined the heartless monster you would later become. You betrayed me in the most unforgivable way possible. I am disgusted with who you have become and very hurt with what you have done and angry that you could look me in the eyes, lie and pretend that all was okay, but all the while you were plotting my murder. And on that horrible night, that betrayal went even deeper as I called out your name begging for your help, and all you did was just close your eyes and ignore my pleas. You have not only taken my life, but you have also taken my memory of the memory of me and tainted it, shattered it, and destroyed me in every way. You have taken everything from me, everything from the very breath in my body, to all the things that I will never get to see and do. And I, I always wanted to see mountains. I will never get to see them now. Nor will I get to meet my grandchildren or celebrate all the happiness of birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, or holidays. I was only forty-eight years old when you murdered me and did so in the cruelest way. I think it is such an injustice that you were given only ten years for my murder. I gave you life, brought you into this world, and you took me out of this world without hesitation. I thought you loved me. Nick thought you loved him. You threw us both under the bus. Now we see that you have never loved anyone but yourself, and it doesn't matter what you have to do, whose life you have to ruin, you will betray and victimize anyone. No one is safe around you. I hope you get all that you deserve, all that pain and heartbreak you caused comes back to you tenfold. Because a person like you doesn't deserve to have good people around you
Javier: That letter, Dee Dee didn't write it. Gypsy did. She wrote it in prison in her mom's voice about herself Next time on Pretend, Gypsy is now a mother, and with that comes a lot of complications.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard: My upbringing was not normal. Um, and I vowed to myself that I'm not gonna be like my mom.
Javier: Her critics will tell you that they're very concerned for the child.
Content Creator: Well, she duped us again. Proof of no baby. This is how we take her down, with no baby. This is how we have to do it.
Javier: But then they came after Gypsy's daughter's medical records, too. That's next time on Pretend Today's episode was written by me, Javier Leva. It was edited by the talented Puneet Shenoy with the Podcast Pundits. Our theme music is by Joe Basile with thechicken.net. I also wanna make a quick correction to part seven. I said that the Department of Corrections released a privileged call between Gypsy and her attorney, Mike Stanfield, and I also told you that they had not written me back. Well, they wrote back, and the department says that attorney-client calls are arranged through a separate procedure and are not recorded, and that they are unaware of any attorney calls being included in the Sunshine Law release. Well, they were. And I did not know that there was a separate line for attorneys and their clients, so you learn something every day. Then I asked them how they decided which prison calls gets released to the public and which ones stay private. They would not tell me. They said that that decision is guided by their own lawyers, and an agency does not have to share its legal advice with the public. So the rule that determined whether hours of Gypsy's phone calls went out to strangers on the internet is a rule that the department will not show anyone. So we're winding down this series on Gypsy Rose Blanchard. I have a couple more episodes that I'd like to get out. Eventually, I do want to release my full interview with Gypsy so you could watch it, more for historical purposes, really, just to document it. You know, I've heard a lot from you guys, both on the pro-Gypsy side and the anti-Gypsy side. You know, on Patreon now, we have a Discord channel where we're talking throughout the day, and it's really a lot of fun. Um, not great for my ADHD, uh, but, uh, really, really engaging conversations there. We're also having really good discussions on the Facebook group for Pretend. So if you have something to say, or if you wanna send me an email, I try to read and respond to every single email I get, send me an email. You could find my email address at my new website, thisispretend.com. That's all I got for today. We'll talk soon.
