The Gypsy Rose Obsession, Part 1

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is the most beloved convicted murderer in America. Half the country sees a victim. The other half thinks she conned everyone, including her mother. I spent months…

"The Gypsy Rose Obsession" is PRETEND's series on Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who spent most of her childhood in a wheelchair and on a feeding tube because her mother, Dee Dee, told doctors she had leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and seizures. In June 2015, Gypsy's secret boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, stabbed Dee Dee to death in Springfield, Missouri. Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and walked out of prison in December 2023, and within days she had millions of followers and an online movement determined to prove she was the real villain.

The series is built around a nearly three-hour interview Javier Leiva recorded with Gypsy at an Airbnb in the Louisiana bayou, about an hour south of New Orleans. It also draws on the medical records that Fancy Macelli posted online, Missouri's case files, seven years of prison calls the state released in 2026, and interviews with a genetic counselor, investigators, and Gypsy's harshest critics. PRETEND's conclusion is that the story is more complicated than either side wants to admit.

Frequently Asked

What is The Gypsy Rose Obsession?

It's PRETEND's series on Gypsy Rose Blanchard, built around a nearly three-hour interview Javier Leiva recorded with her in Louisiana. It examines her leaked medical records, her 1q21.1 genetic diagnosis, her prison calls, and the online communities that have formed for and against her since her release from prison in December 2023.

Did Gypsy Rose Blanchard have a real medical condition?

Yes. Gypsy has a 1q21.1 microdeletion, a missing piece of chromosome 1, confirmed by two tests. She told PRETEND it affects her through a smaller head and strabismus, a lazy eye. The deletion does not explain the paralysis, leukemia, or muscular dystrophy Dee Dee claimed, according to genetic counselor Kira Dineen and the medical literature.

Did Gypsy Rose Blanchard ever have leukemia?

No doctor in the records PRETEND reviewed ever diagnosed Gypsy with leukemia. Every mention traces back to Dee Dee's own account of Gypsy's history. There are no oncology, chemotherapy, or bone marrow transplant records, and her March 2011 blood work was essentially normal.

Could Gypsy Rose Blanchard walk?

Yes. In a video to Nicholas Godejohn released in Missouri's case files, Gypsy said she hid her ability to walk from her mother from about age seven until 2011. A 2009 neurological exam recorded that she reacted to touch on legs Dee Dee described as paralyzed, and her spine MRIs from 2000 and 2001 were normal. She walks without help today.

Why are Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison calls public?

In August 2026, the Missouri Department of Corrections released about seven years of her recorded calls from Chillicothe Correctional Center to a requester under the state's Sunshine Law, four days after the request. Prison calls are generally not treated as public records, and the department declined to tell PRETEND how it decides which calls to release.

Where is Nicholas Godejohn now?

Godejohn is serving life without parole in Missouri for Dee Dee Blanchard's murder, plus a concurrent 25-year sentence for armed criminal action. On October 10, 2025, Chief U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips of the Western District of Missouri denied his federal habeas corpus petition, which argued his trial lawyers were ineffective and his autism wasn't properly assessed, and declined to let him appeal.

What happened to Ken Urker?

Ken Urker, Gypsy's former partner and the father of their daughter, was found dead at his home in Raceland, Louisiana, on October 1, 2026, his 34th birthday. The death investigation is still open and no official cause of death has been released.

People Named in This Investigation

Gypsy's Family and Relationships

Gypsy Rose Blanchard
Subject of the series

Says her mother, Dee Dee, built her illnesses and kept her dependent, and that a real genetic condition doesn't change that. She told PRETEND the murder "wasn't necessary" and that her 10-year plea "is not reflective of the severity of the crime."

Dee Dee Blanchard
Gypsy's mother, killed in June 2015

Told doctors, charities, and reporters that Gypsy had leukemia, muscular dystrophy, seizures, and other conditions. In the records PRETEND reviewed, the leukemia history traces only to Dee Dee's own account. She was never charged with abuse.

Nicholas Godejohn
Gypsy's boyfriend at the time of the murder

Stabbed Dee Dee to death and is serving life without parole. In jailhouse interviews he says Gypsy pushed him to do it and gave him an ultimatum. Gypsy says he killed her mother "in cold blood."

Kristy Blanchard
Gypsy's stepmother

On a recorded prison call, she suggests Gypsy sign her story rights over to the family "because we all know that you can't get paid for it because you were involved."

Ryan Anderson
Gypsy's ex-husband

Married Gypsy while she was in prison. Prison calls released in 2026 capture both of them using racist language. Gypsy has apologized publicly. Anderson says the recordings are a smear campaign stripped of context.

Ken Urker
Gypsy's former partner and the father of her daughter

Died on October 1, 2026. Gypsy says months of online harassment took a heavy toll on him. No cause of death has been released.

Dan Glidewell
Gypsy's online partner before Godejohn

Met Gypsy at a fan convention years before she met Godejohn. Testified under oath in 2022 about their role-play relationship, contradicting her account that Godejohn introduced the dynamic.

Who Made the Records Public

Fancy Macelli
Actress and self-described producer who held a $10 option on Gypsy's life rights

Posted about 300 pages of Gypsy's medical records on Patreon and says the microdeletion "does explain everything." She says the contract gave her the right to use them. The family's 2024 lawsuit accused her of misrepresenting her credentials and refusing to return the files. Those allegations were never adjudicated because the suit was dropped.

Alaura Flowers and Amber Dietz
Hosts of the Into the Weeds podcast

Obtained Missouri's case files on Gypsy through public records requests, including her videos to Godejohn and thousands of prison emails. They say Gypsy changes her story often, and that her messages to Godejohn never describe physical abuse by Dee Dee.

Experts PRETEND Interviewed

Outside specialists who reviewed the evidence or the debate around it for the series.

Licensed certified genetic counselor and host of DNA Today

Reviewed Gypsy's 19-page chromosome report for PRETEND. Found the 1q21.1 deletion linked in the literature to some of Dee Dee's claims, like seizures and feeding problems, but not to paralysis, leukemia, or muscular dystrophy.

Author and host of Nobody Should Believe Me, a podcast about Munchausen by proxy

Says "someone having a legitimate medical condition of any kind does not preclude abuse," and calls the argument that the microdeletion clears Dee Dee "Munchausen by proxy denialism."

Springfield, Missouri: Sheriff and Local Press

Jim Arnott
Greene County, Missouri, sheriff

Says he believes Gypsy was a real victim of abuse but was "more culpable" than her plea reflects, and that "she has turned into her mom."

Springfield radio journalist and host of The Toll

Covered the case from the start and met Gypsy and Dee Dee once. Says she believes Godejohn "would not be in prison for murder today had Gypsy not manipulated and worked him for two and a half years."

What the Medical Records Show

The records Fancy Macelli released are a few hundred pages out of thousands, and PRETEND has none from Louisiana, where Gypsy spent her early childhood. Even so, they show Dee Dee’s explanations for the wheelchair shifting from one visit to the next. In one record Gypsy is paraplegic from birth. In another she has muscular dystrophy, and in another the paralysis followed a fever. When Dee Dee couldn’t answer a question, she said her own memory was damaged in a car accident and the Louisiana records were lost in Hurricane Katrina.

The leukemia claim appears in the files more than once, and every time it traces back to Dee Dee. The released files contain no oncology records, no chemotherapy, and no bone marrow transplant records. One chart even lists an “anaphylactic reaction to processed sugars,” a condition that doesn’t exist and made it into her file because Dee Dee said so.

The records also document procedures that were real. Gypsy had four eye surgeries, a feeding tube, a stomach surgery for reflux, and her salivary glands removed because Dee Dee said she drooled. By her teens, her teeth had rotted and been pulled.

The Microdeletion

Gypsy’s critics have a strong card to play. Her records include a genetic test showing a 1q21.1 microdeletion, which means a tiny piece of chromosome 1 is missing. Gypsy confirmed the diagnosis to PRETEND and sent the results of a follow-up test. Her critics say it explains every illness Dee Dee ever described.

PRETEND sent Gypsy’s 19-page chromosome report to Kira Dineen, a licensed certified genetic counselor and host of DNA Today, and went through Dee Dee’s claims one at a time. Some line up with the deletion, including a smaller head, short stature, eye problems, seizures, and feeding problems. Others don’t. Kira found nothing in the medical literature linking the deletion to paralysis, leukemia, muscular dystrophy, salivary gland problems, or rotting teeth. The two lists overlap, but they are not the same list. Andrea Dunlop, who hosts Nobody Should Believe Me, told PRETEND that a legitimate medical condition doesn’t rule out abuse. Gypsy put it this way: “You could have someone with a condition and it still be a Munchausen by proxy case.” The full breakdown is in Does Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s Genetic Disorder Explain Everything?

Could Gypsy Walk?

She could, and she hid it. In a video to Godejohn that surfaced in Missouri’s case files, Gypsy said she kept her ability to walk from her mother from about age seven until 2011 because she was afraid Dee Dee wouldn’t love her as much. When PRETEND interviewed her, she said Dee Dee always knew. She later described it by email as coercive control, and PRETEND finds that account easier to believe than a child fooling her mother for more than a decade.

The series doesn’t let either side off the hook here. Gypsy’s own words contradict each other, and the records show a 2009 neurologist watching her react to touch on legs Dee Dee called paralyzed.

Was Dee Dee Sick, or a Con Artist?

A growing camp online argues that Dee Dee didn’t have Munchausen by proxy at all. Some say she was a poor single mother working the system, and others say Gypsy was the abuser. Their evidence includes Dee Dee’s internet searches for mother-daughter counseling and group homes in the months before the murder, the BB gun incident Gypsy admits to, and the point, made by the Into the Weeds hosts, that Gypsy’s messages to Godejohn never describe physical abuse.

On the other side are the Habitat for Humanity house, the Make-A-Wish trips, a Ronald McDonald House stay, and a typed list of 15 conditions in a 2007 hospital file. That list includes leukemia, epilepsy, and quadriplegia, many of the words are misspelled, and it doesn’t look like any hospital document PRETEND has seen. PRETEND’s view is that a money scam and Munchausen by proxy are not mutually exclusive. Shaving your child’s head for years when she doesn’t have cancer is not only about money.

The Prison Calls

In August 2026, the Missouri Department of Corrections released about seven years of Gypsy’s recorded calls from Chillicothe Correctional Center to a requester who signed the request “Not your business.” Prison calls are generally not public records, and the department declined to explain how it decides which calls to release.

The calls show the business of being Gypsy taking shape while she was still inside. Her stepmother, Kristy, suggests signing Gypsy’s story rights over to the family, because, as she puts it, “we all know that you can’t get paid for it because you were involved.” On one call Gypsy says she’s going to be rich when she gets out, and on another she says she didn’t have her mother killed just so she could live for everybody else. In calls with Ryan Anderson, the man she married in prison, both of them use racist language. Gypsy has apologized publicly, though she told PRETEND privately that she doesn’t think she was ever racist. A call with Kristy before Godejohn’s trial, in which Gypsy says she “put a lot of focus on Munchausen by proxy” in her interviews, has been passed around as a confession. PRETEND’s read is that playing something up is not the same thing as making it up.

Gypsy as a Mother

Gypsy’s daughter, Aurora, was born in December 2024, and PRETEND has called Gypsy the most surveilled mother in America. People have called child protective services over Gypsy’s social media videos. One report was combined with an earlier one, and the case was closed as not justified. Per a screenshot reviewed by PRETEND, someone pulled Aurora’s immunization record from Louisiana’s state database on July 30, 2025, and it was shown on a TikTok live stream. The federal Office for Civil Rights has opened an investigation into the Louisiana Department of Health. PRETEND does not know who accessed the record and has requested the access log.

Ken Urker

Ken Urker, Gypsy’s former partner and Aurora’s father, was found dead at his home in Raceland, Louisiana, on October 1, 2026, his 34th birthday. The death investigation is open and no official cause of death has been released. Gypsy told PRETEND that months of online harassment had worn him down. PRETEND’s full report, including the sheriff’s office report, is in Gypsy Rose on Ken Urker’s Death.

From PRETEND's coverage of Ken Urker's death.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the June 2015 killing of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, and was released from a Missouri prison on parole in December 2023 after serving about eight and a half years. Nicholas Godejohn, who stabbed Dee Dee, is serving life without parole plus a concurrent 25 years for armed criminal action. On October 10, 2025, a federal judge denied his petition to overturn the conviction. Dee Dee was never charged with abusing Gypsy. No new charges have resulted from PRETEND's reporting.

Key Dates

Dee Dee's Version

  1. 1991

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is born in Louisiana. Her records later list three different birth years: 1991 in Louisiana, 1993 in Missouri, and 1995 according to an attorney Dee Dee hired, who told PRETEND that was the year Dee Dee gave.

  2. 2000–2001

Per medical records reviewed by PRETEND, MRIs of Gypsy's spine come back normal. An October 2000 nerve and muscle test and a January 2001 muscle biopsy show no signs of muscular dystrophy, one of the conditions Dee Dee said Gypsy had.

  3. 2005

After Hurricane Katrina, Dee Dee and Gypsy are evacuated from Louisiana and resettle in Missouri, where Habitat for Humanity helps them into a house. Local news covers them as a family with a critically ill daughter.

  4. March 2007

A Children's Mercy Hospital report includes a typed list of 15 conditions, among them leukemia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, and quadriplegia, with "Paralyzed at birth" handwritten beside it. Several conditions are misspelled, and the list doesn't resemble a hospital form.

  5. 2009

A Children's Mercy neurologist records Dee Dee's report that Gypsy has no sensation below the waist, then notes that Gypsy reacts to a light touch on her legs. He also writes down a seizure history from Dee Dee while noting he has no MRI, no EEG, and no Louisiana records to check it against.

  6. 2011

A chromosomal test in the released records finds a 1q21.1 microdeletion. Gypsy recalls being tested in 2012. The same year, by her own account on a prison call, Gypsy shoots Dee Dee with a BB gun after a failed attempt to run away.

The Murder

  1. 2012

Gypsy meets Nicholas Godejohn of Wisconsin on a Christian dating site.

  2. June 2015

Godejohn stabs Dee Dee Blanchard to death in her bed in Springfield, Missouri. Texts from that night, now part of the public court record, show the two coordinating the killing. A Facebook post reading "That bitch is dead" leads police to the house and then to Godejohn's home in Wisconsin.

  3. 2016

Gypsy pleads guilty to second-degree murder and receives a 10-year sentence.

  4. 2018

A jury convicts Godejohn. He is sentenced to life without parole, plus a concurrent 25 years for armed criminal action.

The Gypsy Economy

  1. 2017–2019

HBO releases "Mommy Dead and Dearest" and Hulu premieres "The Act" in March 2019. Around 2017, Fancy Macelli obtains a one-year option on Gypsy's life rights from her father and stepmother for $10, along with access to her medical records and case files. Ken Urker proposes to Gypsy in prison in October 2018, and they split the following year.

  2. May 2020

Gypsy has her first recorded prison call with Ryan Anderson. They marry while she is still incarcerated, about two years later.

  3. 2022

Dan Glidewell, who met Gypsy at a fan convention years before she met Godejohn, testifies under oath at Godejohn's post-conviction hearing about the role-play relationship he had with her.

  4. December 2023

Gypsy is released on parole after about eight and a half years. Within days her TikTok account reaches millions of followers.

After Prison

  1. 2024

Gypsy leaves Ryan Anderson and reconnects with Ken Urker. In May, she and her family sue Fancy Macelli, who had posted about 300 pages of Gypsy's medical records on Patreon. The suit is later dropped over jurisdiction. Gypsy and Ken's daughter, Aurora, is born in December.

  2. July 30, 2025

Per a screenshot reviewed by PRETEND, someone pulls Aurora's immunization record from Louisiana's LINKS database, and it is shown on a TikTok live stream. The federal Office for Civil Rights later opens an investigation into the Louisiana Department of Health.

  3. October 10, 2025

Chief U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips of the Western District of Missouri denies Godejohn's federal habeas corpus petition, which argued that his trial lawyers were ineffective, that his autism was never properly assessed, and that Gypsy manipulated him. The court also denies him a certificate of appealability.

PRETEND's Series

  1. August 2026

The Missouri Department of Corrections releases about seven years of Gypsy's recorded prison calls to a requester under the state's Sunshine Law, four days after the request. PRETEND's series premieres on August 11.

  2. October 1, 2026

Ken Urker is found dead at his home in Raceland, Louisiana, on his 34th birthday. The death investigation is open and no cause of death has been released. Part 9 of the series is released on October 6.
